Sesimbra's Carnival is one of the most traditional and vibrant celebrations in Portugal, which grew throughout the 20th century as a community festival and became formally structured in the 1970s and 1980s with the official introduction of organized samba schools. Influenced by Brazilian traditions, the event has evolved from spontaneous coastal gatherings into structured parades where local groups spend months preparing their costumes and floats. In recent years, these groups have adapted their attire by introducing neon materials and LED lighting to increase the visibility and visual impact of their performances during the night.
