The housing demonstration on October 24, 2026, in Lisbon brought thousands of people together to protest the housing crisis and demand the right to dignified housing. In the image, the demonstrator in the center, Eugénio Ruivo, holds a historical poster depicting the political prisoners released from the Caxias Fortress on April 26, 1974, one day after the Carnation Revolution. Eugénio, himself a political prisoner who was only 21 years old at the time, appears in this iconic picture by photojournalist Carlos Alberto. He is the third person from the left, wearing a white turtleneck sweater. Like him, these men were mostly anti-fascist opponents of the Estado Novo regime, including members of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and other left-wing activists who had been jailed by the political police (PIDE/DGS) for their resistance and struggle for freedom.
On the afternoon of October 24, 2026, thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Lisbon to protest Portugal's worsening affordable housing crisis and demand urgent government intervention. Organized by civic housing platforms, the march began around 3:00 PM at Marquês de Pombal and descended down Avenida da Liberdade, with people of all ages carrying banners calling for rent caps, a halt on real estate purchases by investment funds, and an increase in public housing. The large, high-energy crowd blocked traffic as they marched toward Rossio Square.
Translation of the central poster: "WHO IS AFRAID OF PEOPLE'S POWER?"
Translation of the poster further up and to the left: "Housing is not a luxury, it's a necessity"
