New! Categorize your photos
Hey everyone,
I’m happy to let you know that we have just released a new update to the PortraitMode platform.
π·οΈ Meet categories
With this release we bring more structure to the PortraitMode platform & increase the discoverability for your photos.
Unlike tags, categories are predefined. This is a good starting point to bring more variety to the platform & allows you to find photos related to specific topics, such as Black & White, Landscape, Film Photography, etc. All in the context of street-photography.
To categorize your photos, simply select up to 5 categories 10 categories when publishing a photo from your personal profile. To categorize existing photos, simply right-click the photo of your choice and assign related categories. If you have been working with albums before, you know exactly what to do.
Categories can be discovered through the search right from the explore page and are displayed below each photo.
While we are starting with an extensive list of categories, your photo might belong in a category that doesn’t exist yet. If that’s the case, you can reach out and suggest a category here.
β¨ What’s next?
We plan to extend categories with camera models and display them in a similar fashion. This will further increase discoverability and makes PortraitMode a more structured resource for street-photography in general.
Tags are not currently planned as they can get out of hand pretty quickly. As I mentioned above, if you have any categories to suggest, please reach out.
We will continue to focus on the app moving forward and hope to have it ready by the end of the year. As always, if you have any feedback, please let me know down in the comments below.

Hi,
I like the additions of categories but I don’t seem a way to add them on my iPhone, as long pressing the image opens an iOS popup for the image and not the categories dialog.
Do you plan to add the categories also on the photos page, such that on mobile one can add them from there?
Hey @jonatan,
You are referring to existing photos on your profile, is that correct?
Can you confirm that it works when uploading a new photo? Thank you.
Correct, that is what I meant.
Yes, Itβs working when uploading a new photo.
Okay, gotcha! Thanks for the confirmation. I’ve added this to our list and we’re going to look into the mobile experience here again π
“Tags are not currently planned as they can get out of hand pretty quickly.” <– Good π It would be chaos, just like on IG and Vero.
I can't seem to edit my old photos and add categories. Is this just for new posts?
Totally agree!
That’s strange, you should be able to select available categories from the context menu when right-clicking the photos on your profile. That’s only currently available from a desktop computer/laptop though.
Ah, right-click works! I left-clicked and tried to edit from there. And then I could only edit the image description.
Totally agree! I feel like I need to spend more time researching tags on IG and Vero than I do actually taking photos…
I like categories.
I just hope it doesn’t lag behind like it does on other platforms
so is that free accounts certain categories are not available.
Are there already predefined categories?
Categories are available to anyone and the list of categories is constantly updated. All categories are predefined but if you type out a category that doesn’t exist, you can suggest it (which will send us an email to review the category and add it if needed).
I really like the concept of categories too, I just wish it was used more. We’ll try to make selecting at least 1 category mandatory for a certain period of time to see how that affects the user experience.
Categories will help make PortraitMode a better resource for street photography on the long run.
Hello David,
it would be good if the existing categories were displayed when I want to upload an image, i.e. an overview in which I can tick the desired category.
Now I have to try out which categories exist, that’s cumbersome
Good call! Let me see what we can do here. In the meantime, you can view all available categories here – https://portraitmode.io/categories/
Hi David , Just checking is there a way to see or add to our own profile any new uploads from the people we follow , Thanks for any info
Hey @psw71, this is a feature that’s already on our roadmap.
We hope to have that ready once the app launches.
Thank you so much for the update David
