About This Competition

Light can completely transform a scene. A beam of sunlight cutting through darkness, a person reduced to a silhouette, harsh shadows, or a composition built around bright highlights and deep blacks. Contrast can turn an ordinary moment into a striking photograph.

For this competition, we’re looking for photographs that explore the relationship between light and darkness in any way you see it.

Think dramatic shadows, high-contrast compositions, silhouettes, strong highlights, deep blacks, unexpected light, or simply a scene where the contrast between light and dark creates something compelling.

Rules

  • One photo per participant
  • The photograph must clearly show contrast or interplay between light & shadow
  • Color and black & white photographs are welcome
  • Photos must follow all our submission guidelines

Voting & submission

The submission period and voting period are separate. You can submit one photo during the submission period, after which voting begins.

Each member receives 100 points to allocate across submissions in increments of 5. Points can be given to one photo or distributed across multiple photos, and can be reallocated at any time before voting closes.

The three submissions with the highest point totals at the end of the voting period are declared the winners.
