October update – What’s new in the PortraitMode app?
We’ve spent the past couple of weeks focusing on improving the stability of the PortraitMode app. Version 1.9.9, now available on both Android and iOS, is the result of these efforts. It not only fixes most of the bugs we’ve encountered but also adds new features and quality-of-life improvements.
Let’s dive in.
📱 Improved “Home” screen
The new home screen lets you switch between photos from people you follow and photos recently posted on the platform. This brings a bit more structure to the app experience and makes it easier to discover new photographers.
We have also added a section showing you photos that are “currently trending”. This section highlights the most-liked photos in a specific time period and gives extra exposure to the community’s favorite photos and photographers. This section is now also available on the “Explore” screen.
🎟️ In-app Feedback Requests
With the introduction of PortraitMode Pro, we have added Feedback Tokens to PortraitMode. These tokens can now be used when uploading a photo from the app and by long-pressing a photo on your profile & selecting the respective menu-item in the context menu.
🔧 Stability improvements
The app should now feel snappier and run much smoother. The issue with images not loading properly should also be fixed. We will continue to monitor any issues with the app and implement changes and fixes as we develop new features for both the web and mobile experiences.
🏆 Photo of the month
Not related to the app, but still worth mentioning, we have just launched a new format on PortraitMode, crowning the photo of the month along with the top 10 photos posted during that time period.
This is not an editor’s choice section but is based on the number of likes the photos receive from the community. If you haven’t already, feel free to check out the Street photography of the month for September 2023.
🤝 Wrapping up
As we conclude our tour of the latest PortraitMode updates, we’re happy to deliver a more stable and faster app experience with Version 1.9.9. Image loading issues have been resolved, and we’ll continue to fine-tune.
Thank you for being part of the PortraitMode community. Stay inspired, keep capturing moments in the streets, and watch for more exciting developments ahead.

Good job on the new Home-screen, I barely used the app the past couple of weeks because it used to be flooded with pictures from people I don’t follow. (This is mostly due to the fact that I don’t follow a lot of users, I’m very picky)
Regarding the new following-tab, the images seem to disappear once I’ve viewed them. Is this a bug or a feature? (If it’s a feature, my question would be: why? Why not show them in a chronological order so we can view them more than once?)
The currently trending-tab is also a nice addition but I feel like it should exclude already featured images. Right now about 95% of the images shown in the tab are featured ones. Kind of doppelt gemoppelt.
Keep up the good work!
Why when you update your name it doesn’t change it in your profile?
Does it still not change, even after refreshing the page?
It appears not still
Is this about the app or website?
Website.
I go to Edit Profile
Edit the First name and Last name field
Click Update Profile
Then it says Your profile has been updated.
The going to your profile the name isn’t update.
I can confirm this. We’re going to look into this asap. Thank you for bringing this to our attention! 🙂
Hi, for the last couple of days the app will not load up. Just get the logo in the middle of the screen.
Android 14, Security Update 5 (Nov 23)
Have cleared app cache, uninstalled and reinstalled a few time but still the same issue. Any ideas what could be causing this as I’m getting withdrawal symptoms lol
Kind regards,
Ian
Hey Ian,
That’s strange. We have published an app update earlier today, can you check if updating to the latest version fixes that issue for you?
Cheers,
David
Hi David, have downloaded the latest version and still the same, comes up with PortraitMode isn’t responding..
Can access it fine via a web browser.
Thanks,
Ian
Update:
Re installed again, reset app permissions, cleared cache, rebooted, now working 🙂
That’s awesome, glad it’s working now!
I wasn’t able to replicate this on my end – this seems to happen for some people every now and then. Weird one for sure!
