Englistan - Satire?

Yesterday an "Englistan” billboard appeared in Whitechapel. Whether it was meant as art or satire is almost irrelevant. Tower Hamlets isn’t a blank canvas for clever ideas that other people have to live with afterwards. After decades of the NF, BNP, EDL, Britain First, UKIP and just last weekend with Posie Parker targeting our borough, most locals were not going to see art. We have to live with the backlash, the suspicion and the fallouts. That’s why it was removed today. Not because art is opposed, but because we oppose anything that unnecessarily increases tension in a community that already carries enough of that burden. Whitechapel isn’t “Englistan”. It’s home.
